Pay the Xenofobie: 5 Million Rands

Pay the Xenofobie: 5 Million Rands — Onyeka Nwelue

In a wine cellar turned secret war room outside Pretoria, a woman known as die Maker presents a chilling mission to nine Black South Africans: provoke and carry out violent protests against other African nationals. In exchange, each participant is promised five million rand by a shadowy organisation known as the “Hunters of Kwerekwere.”

Unbeknownst to the conspirators, a Tsonga sex worker nearby overhears fragments of their plan. As the nine participants—each representing a different South African ethnic group—are drawn into the operation, a dangerous game begins against the backdrop of a decaying industrial Pretoria.

Pay the Xenofobie: 5 Million Rands is an action-packed satire that confronts xenophobia, manipulation and the exploitation of ethnic divisions. With sharp social commentary and an intriguing premise, Onyeka Nwelue crafts a provocative story about the forces that can turn communities against one another.
