Lord of the Shacks — Onyeka Nwelue
Meet Mandla Shabalala, a man known throughout his settlement as the “Lord of the Shacks.” Despite the grand title, Mandla owns none of the shacks around him. Like his neighbours, he lives with leaking roofs, unreliable electricity and the uncertainty that comes with promises from government officials who appear during election seasons and disappear soon after.
Told in Mandla’s distinctive voice, Lord of the Shacks offers a compelling glimpse into the lives of people living in informal settlements. With humour, honesty and sharp social observation, Onyeka Nwelue explores poverty, housing insecurity, political promises and the everyday resilience of ordinary people.
Recognised as an award-winning novel, this work offers readers a thought-provoking perspective on social inequality and life on the margins of society.
